Originally, banana squash comes from South America. Archaelogists have found evidence of banana squashes such as Pink Banana in Peru, having grown there from centuries past. R. H. Shumway introduced the first type of banana squash to Americans in 1893, offering it for sale in his seed catalog. Soon it became quite popular, and grew in many 19th century American gardens.
