Perennial. Northern Sea Oats is an ornamental clumping grass native to the U.S. Its nodding seed heads dance in the slightest breeze. Its foliage and seeds turn a rich, coppery red as temperatures cool in autumn, then mature to bronze as winter draws near. Nice for waters' edge or other moist, partial shade area. Leave them standing for their fall beauty, or cut for dried flower arrangements.
Plants started in early spring will produce seed heads the first year. This lovely woodland grass is treasured for its showy, drooping flowers and slender, bamboo-like foliage that changes from green to copper in the fall. One of the few native grasses that grows well in shade. You can plant it in the border, shade garden, naturalized areas, along streams or on the edge of a water garden.
It also grows well in large containers and is one of the best grasses for cut flower arrangements. Excellent both as a specimen plant and in masses.
