Germination: Cold stratify in moist sowing mix for 2-3 months. Sow 1cm in coir or sowing mix + perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet.
A large shrub or small tree with spiny branches, glossy green leaves and small, yellow flowers followed by attractive red fruits.
The dried fruits have a similar taste and flavor to Sichuan pepper (Z. piperitum) and are used in chutney and curries in the Himalayas. It is also an important medicinal plant.
