The Little Leaf Linden Tree has many purposes. Some use it for its impressive honey production, others as a shade tree, ornamental tree or as a flowering tree. This tree was originally imported from Europe where it has been in use since ancient times. Some trees exist in Europe that are thought to be over 1000 years old. Growing to a height of 50-60' tall and produces 40' wide thick spreading canopy that is able to block out sunlight. It can be found in many parks and yards throughout North America & Europe. The Little Leaf Linden tree blooms in the early summer after nearly everything else has bloomed, which make it a great tree for beekeepers and bee enthusiasts as it helps to extend the summer honey flow for bee. When in bloom this tree will be carpeted with abundant clusters of yellowish flowers that fill the air with a very pleasant fragrance and is one of the top honey producing trees available. During a strong nectar flow, the flowers are reported to glisten like morning dew. Although harder to find in American, Linden Honey is a common and sought after varietal honey found in Europe. The honey produced from Linden trees is light in color but its intensity and aroma is stronger than the light color would indicate. Young leaves are reported to be edible and the leaves and flowers are reportedly used for soothing herbal teas as well as having many other benefits. In addition to using as a shade tree, little leaf lindens can also be trimmed back to form a dense hedge or screen. Grows in usda zones 3-8 and can grow up to 24" per year and can thrive even in polluted urban conditions. This is a perfect tree for sidewalks and front yards and does well in most soil types.
