Quercus virginiana Live Oak Tree Seeds Bonsai
Live oak is considered an evergreen, but does loose leaves at various times in the winter for brief periods. Horizontal branches spread out with thick, leathery, oval, dark green leaves
The bark is dark red-brown to gray and deeply furrowed, eventually becoming blocky making this a perfect specimen for bonsai culture. Flowers appear in early spring and are typical of oaks.
The catkins hang down 2-3" followed by brownish-black acorns about an inch long that mature in the autumn. The ultimate shade tree that grows fast and lives long. Grow in moist, but sandy and well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Drought tolerant once established. Zones 8-11
This tree makes a most interesting bonsai project and also grows well as a container plant for the home or greenhouse in addition to being a specimen plant
