In contrast to its tropical relatives, this rare hibiscus specimen is very hardy, enabling it to tolerate colder conditions. In addition to its stunning cranberry foliage--which resembles that of the Japanese maple--and lush pink/maroon flowers, this vigorous specimen also has larger and longer-lasting flowers than other members of the hibiscus family. Its young leaves are used as a vegetable and flowers are used to make teas and other beverages. The plant also has several medicinal applications.
